Dental hygiene is very important during orthodontic treatment. Food particles can accumulate on teeth and around the braces, and over time can turn into plaque. The bacteria in plaque, when left on the teeth, can cause etching of the tooth enamel and gum disease. The best way to keep your teeth clean is with regular brushing and flossing.
Brushing Using a soft bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste, you should brush your teeth at least four times per day---after breakfast, after lunch or right after school, after dinner, and before going to bed. Small circular motions work best to reach food particles that accumulate along the gum line and under the orthodontic wires. Hold the brush at an angle and brush slowly and carefully, making sure to cover all tooth surfaces. It will take some time to properly brush your teeth. You should also brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth every time you brush your teeth. You will most likely have to replace your brush more often during orthodontic treatment. When the bristles wear down or fray, replace your brush with a new one. You may also find it helpful to use a fluoride mouth wash for optimal oral hygiene.Flossing Dental floss will clean the areas between the teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach. It takes a little longer to floss when you are wearing braces, but it is very important to do so every day. We will provide you with reusable floss threaders and show you how to get the floss under your wires. When you first begin flossing around your braces, your gums may bleed a little. This bleeding indicates that your gums are not as healthy as they should be. Bleeding should stop within a few days after you begin your flossing routine. |
